PRESS RELEASE
CALIFORNIA’S LEADING DEMOCRATS, REPUBLICANS AGREE: NO ON PROP 45
Opposition Ranges from California Democratic Party to Tea Party California Caucus as GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Hilton Also Drops Support
SACRAMENTO – Broad bipartisan opposition continues to grow against Proposition 45, the California Chamber of Commerce’s 41-page ballot initiative that would roll back state environmental protections and weaken the state’s defense against federal attacks on state clean air, water, and public health laws.
POLITICO reports that GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has walked back his support of the measure in a post on X, joining leading Democratic candidates that have refused to endorse it.
In addition, the Tea Party California Caucus announced it strongly opposes Proposition 45, writing that the measure "[s]hortcuts public safety & local control for special interest energy projects.”
“The dangers of Prop 45 have brought voters and elected officials who agree on little else together in opposition to this unnecessary and sweeping measure,” says No on Prop 45 spokesperson Woody Little. “Prop 45’s provisions to allow short cuts for the siting of data centers, cutting corners on community involvement and leaving taxpayers on the hook for $100 million or more each year are uniting leaders from both sides of the aisle.”
Earlier this month, six county Republican organizations – Del Norte, Fresno, Marin, San Luis Obispo, Solano, and Sonoma – all have officially urged local Republicans to vote No on the measure.
A recent PPIC poll also noted low Republican support, with only 51 percent saying they would vote yes – a stunning decline of 10 percent from July. That number reflects the cratering of support for Prop 45 among all voters, which now has the support of less than half of those polled.
The California Democratic Party has an official “no” on Proposition 45 position as does the California Working Families Party and the California Green Party. Leading Democratic officials formally opposing the measure include Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), Congressman Ro Khanna (D-Fremont), Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park), State Treasurer Fiona Ma, State Senator Catherine Blakespear (D-Encinitas) and State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles), as well as Assemblymembers Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles), Chris Rogers (D-Santa Rosa), and Damon Connolly (D-San Rafael).
