MAJOR UNIONS UNITE AGAINST PROP 45

UFCW, CNA, NUHW, Laborers and Teamsters Locals Warn of Measure’s Health and Financial Threats

SACRAMENTO – Several of the largest and most influential labor unions in California today announced their opposition to Proposition 45, the California Chamber of Commerce’s 41-page ballot initiative that would roll back state environmental protections and weaken the state’s defense against President Trump’s attack on state clean air, clean water and public health laws.

The new opponents of Prop 45 include: California Nurses Association (CNA), National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), Southern California District Council of Laborers, and Teamsters Joint Council 42.

“When corporate giants spend millions to steamroll communities and silence their voices, we know whose side we’re on,” said Mark Ramos, President of UFCW Western States Council. “For our members up and down the state, pollution isn’t just a talking point—it means asthma, higher cancer risks, and more trips to the doctor for their kids. Prop 45 puts our members and their families at risk, and we won’t stand for it.”

“Labor is united against Prop 45 because it’s a power grab by corporate developers,” said Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions. “That’s why Prop 45 has zero labor support and our opposition only keeps growing.”

The unions joins over 30 labor groups and 400 other organizations opposed to Proposition 45, including the California Federation of Labor Unions, California Professional Firefighters, California Federation of Teachers, League of Women Voters of California, and the American Lung Association.

The independent Legislative Analyst’s Office concluded the measure will likely cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
