MORE PRO-HOUSING GROUPS REFUSE TO SUPPORT PROP 45
Leading Bay Area Group “Deeply Concerned About This Measure’s Potential Negative Impacts”
SACRAMENTO – Prop 45 continues to fail to win the support of the state’s major pro-housing groups, including prominent organizations in the Bay Area – undercutting proponents' claims that the measure will accelerate housing development. Proposition 45 is the California Chamber of Commerce’s 41-page ballot initiative that would roll back state environmental protections and weaken the state’s defense against President Trump’s attack on state clean air, water, and public health laws.
An analysis by the prominent pro-housing group SPUR (San Francisco Bay Area Planning and Urban Research Association) found “The measure’s broad scope could streamline environmentally harmful projects or worsen conditions in environmental justice communities, regardless of location or scale” and that “Requiring a two-thirds legislative vote for amendments could make the law difficult to adapt or improve.”
Other pro-housing groups, including East Bay for Everyone, Silicon Valley at Home, and Streets For All, announced their opposition to Prop 45.
In an analysis titled “Vote No on Prop 45: Streamlining Sprawl/Freeways is NOT Pro-Housing” East Bay for Everyone finds that Prop 45 “is about streamlining destructive sprawl—not infill housing.”
Streets For All, a transit advocacy group, stated “It should be easier to build housing, clean energy, transit, and bike infrastructure. But that’s not what Prop 45 does.”
The 450+ member No on Proposition 45 campaign coalition, which includes the California Professional Firefighters, League of Women Voters and the American Lung Association, has made these points the centerpiece of its opposition campaign.
