PRO-HOUSING GROUP CALIFORNIA YIMBY REFUSES TO BACK PROP 45
SACRAMENTO – Undercutting the California Chamber of Commerce’s claim that its Proposition 45 will accelerate housing development, the pro-housing group California YIMBY (“Yes In My Back Yard”) is refusing to back the measure, saying “there are good reasons to oppose it” in a recently published analysis.
Proposition 45 is the California Chamber of Commerce’s 41-page ballot initiative that would roll back state environmental protections and weaken the state’s defense against President Trump’s attack on state clean air, water, and public health laws.
In its analysis, California YIMBY points out “While this measure does affect housing, it’s not primarily about housing.” The group concludes “it will have a much more significant impact on non-housing projects.”
The 400+ member No on Proposition 45 campaign coalition, which includes the California Professional Firefighters, League of Women Voters and the American Lung Association in California, has made that point the centerpiece of its opposition campaign.
The analysis continues: “Our friends in the environmental movement have raised significant substantive concerns about this measure. Most relevant to housing voters: we should not be building new homes in the fire-prone wildland urban interface because doing so puts people in harm’s way and exacerbates our insurance crisis. The fact that Prop 45 makes it easier to build freeways but not high speed rail also gives us pause.”

According to its website, "California YIMBY’s mission is to make California an affordable place to live, work, and raise a family. Achieving our mission will put California on a path of broad-based economic prosperity, creating vibrant, livable, and inclusive communities for everyone."
