STATE TREASURER FIONA MA: VOTE NO ON PROP 45
Measure Costly to Smart Development, Taxpayers, and Environment
SACRAMENTO – California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, whose portfolio oversees state financing of housing, infrastructure and water projects, today urged voters to reject Proposition 45.
“While I believe we should reduce unnecessary bureaucracy to bring more housing, infrastructure and water projects online, Proposition 45 is a dangerous, sweeping measure that weakens community input and environmental protections,” said Ma.
“California is facing an affordability crisis, and we need thoughtful reforms that make it easier to build while ensuring transparency and accountability. We should also reduce unnecessary litigation, because the costs of prolonged lawsuits ultimately fall on consumers. Proposition 45 is like using a sledgehammer to swat a mosquito—a measure driven by special interests, rather than the balanced reforms Californians need.”
Ma chairs key committees that finance affordable housing, including the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee (CDLAC) and the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTCAC). In addition, the State Treasurer’s Office provides financing for schools, roads, housing, recycling and waste management, hospitals, public facilities, and other crucial infrastructure projects that better the lives of residents.
Proposition 45 is the California Chamber of Commerce’s 41-page ballot initiative that would roll back state environmental protections and weaken the state’s defense against President Trump’s attack on state clean air, water, and public health laws. It is opposed by the California Democratic Party, California Professional Firefighters, League of Women Voters of California, American Lung Association and 400+ other environmental, health and public safety groups.
The independent Legislative Analyst’s Office concluded the measure will likely cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
