PRESS RELEASE
THREE MORE CALIFORNIA NEWS OUTLETS: NO ON PROPOSITION 45
Santa Barbara Independent, Bay Area Reporter, SF Bay Guardian Urge Readers to Vote No on Polluters’ Initiative
SACRAMENTO – Three more California newspapers – the Santa Barbara Independent, the Bay Area Reporter, and the SF Bay Guardian – are urging their readers to vote no on Proposition 45. Proposition 45 is the California Chamber of Commerce’s 41-page ballot initiative that would roll back state environmental protections and weaken the state’s defense against President Trump’s attack on state clean air, water, and public health laws.
From the Santa Barbara Independent: “We will stipulate the problems caused by excessive red tape are real and really infuriating. But anybody claiming to have a simple solution is to be distrusted…Prop. 45 is just another one-size-fits-all solution that will not succeed in getting affordable housing built...Vote no.”
From the SF Bay Guardian: “NO NO NO. Supporters are pushing this as a pro-housing measure, but it’s actually a sweeping attack on the California Environmental Quality Act…Vote no.”
From the Bay Area Reporter: “This initiative statute would gut the California Environmental Quality Act to expedite review for specified project categories, including housing, transportation, water, health, wildfire mitigation, internet access, and clean energy projects. Opponents point out that it creates a loophole for projects such as data centers, pipelines, and others. While the state does need more housing, laws enacted in recent years already allow for speedier approvals. Prop 45 would weaken critical protections for air and water quality protection. It is opposed by organized labor, nurses, and both the Harvey Milk and Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic clubs. Vote NO on Prop 45.”
